Organising a housewarming means having people over, often for the first time, in a home that's still only half set up. Nothing complicated, but there are a few practical details: helping people find an address nobody knows, working with the space and furniture you've got, stopping everyone from bringing the same thing and staying on good terms with brand-new neighbours. An invitation with the access details, a who-brings-what list and a headcount are all you need for a great evening.
How far in advance should you organise a housewarming?
3 weeks before
Choose the date
Wait until you at least have somewhere for guests to sit and the boxes are out of the way. A Saturday evening or a Sunday lunch, depending on how tolerant the building is.
2 weeks before
Invite and count
Send the invitation link with the exact address. The number of replies will tell you whether it's a stand-up drinks party or a proper sit-down meal.
1 week before
Share out who brings what
List what's needed by category (drinks, savoury, sweet, ice) and let everyone sign up. Borrow chairs, glasses and a speaker from those who have them.
2 days before
Warn the neighbours and share the access details
Drop the neighbours a note, then send the door code, floor, parking instructions and nearest public transport. Those coming by car can offer seats.
The day after
Tidy up and say thank you
Return whatever was lent, share the photos from the evening and say thank you for the gifts, plants and bottles included.
